Utah Web Design Experts Give Their Advice

Not long ago, very few Utah web design firms existed because owning a website was seen as more of a luxury than a need. Oh, how the times have changed! Though this ideology still exists, the number of business owners that believed their clientele didn’t use the internet used to be much larger. Of course we know now that “everybody and their dog” -as they say- is on the internet. In some ways the business world has become simpler, but in many more ways, the internet has become much more complex. With all of the different advertising mediums that continue to be invented, ownership of a website has become very similar to ownership of physical real estate.

In years past, Salt Lake City web design companies were hard to find. These days, however, Utah has become somewhat of a ‘Silicon Valley’ with internet marketing companies popping up all over the place. A business owner like you probably don’t care which company you go with, as long as they can give you a competitive advantage on the internet. This is where the conflict between web designers and website owners has its roots. The minute that the designer duplicates the work he or she did for you, it is no longer can be used as a competitive advantage. What many business owners have learned the hard way is that proprietary rights to a design are always retained by the designer unless otherwise stated in the contract, whether you paid for them or not.

This may sound like a shady law to live by, but when you see the web builder’s point of view, the reasons become clearer. You see, a web builder, designer or anybody in the Utah web design industry puts food on the table by applying his or her skill set to any client that comes along. It’s not easy to put all your artistic enthusiasm into a project only to hear criticism from the very firm that is paying you for your skills. Then, when the masterpiece is done, they take all the credit. When all is said and done, the commissioned professional should be able to use his or her creations and concepts in future projects, right?

What we don’t want to do is become too radically in favor of either the designer’s rights or the client’s rights. Salt Lake City web design continues to grow as an industry and the belief is about to get bigger with companies like Adobe and Twitter moving into town. All participants in the industry, clients and firms alike, should feel a need to learn about how to create and foster a mutually beneficial relationship. For example, including certain provisions in a contract can clear up many of the misunderstandings that can come about as a result of the opposing motivations held by designers and their clients.

The one thing that all business owners will want to protect themselves from is a situation in which your Salt Lake City web design firm is basically giving you license to use the website you’re paying for. If your web design firm offers to purchase the domains for you, my advice is to decline and ask them to coach you through the process. That same advice pertains to purchasing server space. If a business owner allows a designer or firm to purchase such things in their behalf, they are handing over ownership to the core of the site. Then, if the web builder is the originator of the content and design elements, the site that you are paying for belongs to them. Follow my advice; do your homework and save yourself from such a sticky situation.
